In Ecuador, 75 prisoners were murdered in one day during mutinies which took place in three prisons on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. The defender of the people, the organization who takes care of human rights, described this day as “unprecedented massacre”.
According to the Ecuadorian authorities of criminal organizations are responsible for these mutinies while the penitentiary services specify that this is a section of the war that the gangs are engaged in controlling drug trafficking.
The director of the establishment of Guayaquill thus considered that the uprising of prisoners is a reaction to control actions carried out in the cells, the day before, where two firearms had been seized. They had to be used to kill chiefs of a band. Those who wanted to eliminate them then ordered “the assassination of prisoners of other centers,” he told AFP.
