67 journalists killed in 2025, Gaza at the center of the murderous toll

The year 2025 ends with a heavy price for the world press: 67 journalists lost their lives in the line of duty, almost half of them in the Gaza Strip. The report published by Reporters Without Borders highlights the impunity and growing dangers facing information professionals.

Between December 1, 2024 and December 1, 2025, 67 journalists were killed worldwide, an increase compared to the 49 deaths recorded in 2023. The RSF organization points to the responsibility of the armed forces, regular or irregular, as well as organized crime gangs. “Journalists do not die, they are killed,” says the report, recalling the increased danger of practicing the profession in zones of conflict and instability.

Gaza, deadliest area

The war in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023, continues to increase the toll. Nearly half of the journalists killed in 2025 were killed by Israeli forces. Since October 2023, RSF has recorded at least 220 deaths of media collaborators, including 29 occurring in the last year in the context of their professional activity. The organization denounces the deliberate targeting of journalists for their role as international informants.

Mexico and organized crime

The report also highlights other flashpoints, including Mexico, where nine journalists were killed in 2025 despite government promises of protection. RSF deplores that, in several countries, the authorities fail to protect journalists and that impunity remains the norm.

Anne Bocandé, editorial director of RSF, insists: “The real issue today is for governments to put the protection of journalists back at the center of their concerns and not, on the contrary, to make them targets. » The organization calls for concrete measures to ensure the safety of media professionals and fight impunity.
