The drama took place this Friday, March 26, in Sohag in the south of the country on Friday, March 26. Two trainers have collided, causing at least 32 dead and 108 injured according to a first assessment presented by the Egyptian Ministry of Health.

According to local media, the emergency services are still on site, to try to help many passengers still blocked in cars and under the trains.

Dozens of ambulances were mobilized to transport the wounded to hospitals and medical reinforcements were sent from Cairo, according to the ministry which adds that the number of injured has increased to more than a hundred.

Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sissi has promised a “deterrent sanction” to any person responsible for the collision. “Anyone who has caused this painful accident by negligence or corruption or any other reason must receive a dissuasive sanction, without exception or delay,” he wrote on his Twitter account.
