1668 journalists killed worldwide in twenty years

Nearly 1,700 journalists have been killed since 2003, in a heavy review denounced this Friday, December 30, 2022 by reporters Without Borders.

Indeed, 1668 journalists have been killed over the past 20 years, according to the balance sheet established by RSF.

“Behind the figures, there are the faces, the personality, the talent and the commitment of those who paid their lives in their lives, their search for the truth,” said his secretary general Christophe Deloire in a press release.

Marked by war, Iraq and Syria dominate, over the period 2003-2022, the classification of the most dangerous countries for the profession, with a total of 578 killed. They arrive ahead of Mexico (125), the Philippines (107), Pakistan (93), Afghanistan (81) and Somalia (78).

The years 2012 and 2013 were the deadliest years with respectively 144 and 142 homicides, linked in particular to the conflict in Syria, underlines the organization of defense of press freedom.

After an lull, the number of deaths went upwards in 2022 with 58 journalists killed against 51 the previous year, due to the war in Ukraine.
