Two prizes for “beyond the mountains” of Mohamed Ben Attia at the Luxor African Film Festival

The 13th edition of the Luxor African Film Festival ended yesterday, marking the closing of a week rich in cinematographic discoveries. During the closing ceremony, the jury, composed of Burkinabé actresses Aï Keïta Yara and Maimouna N’Diaye, Tunisian director Mokhtar Ladjimi and Egyptian directors Hala Khalil and Mohamed Yasin, unveiled the winners of this edition.

Among the distinguished films, Beyond the mountains/Behind the mountains (2023), directed by Mohamed Ben Attia and co -produced by Nomadis Images (Dorra Bouchoucha and Lina Chaabane), the films of the River and Tanit Films (Nadim Cheikhrouha) shone by his quality and his impact.

This feature film won two awards: the jury prize (ex æquo) and the price of the best actor for Majd Mastoura, who plays the main role.

Presented for the first time at the Venice Festival, in the “Horizons” section, Beyond the mountains has since been selected at several renowned international festivals, such as the Red Sea Film Festival and the Marrakech International Film Festival.

Synopsis:
After spending four years in prison, Rafik has only one idea in mind: taking his son beyond the mountains to show him his incredible discovery.

Born in Tunisia in 1976, Mohamed Ben Attia studied audiovisual communication at the University of Valenciennes. He started his career as a filmmaker with short films such as Like the others (2006), who won the money price at Fespaco or Selma (2013), selected in competition at the Clermont-Ferrand festival. His first feature film, Hedi, a wind of freedom (2016), was a great success and was awarded the prize for the best first film and the silver bear for best actor for Majd Mastoura in La Berlinale. His second film, My dear child (2018), also very acclaimed, was selected at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes.

This new consecration at the Luxor African Film Festival confirms the talent of Mohamed Ben Attia and the strength of Tunisian cinema on the international scene.
