Place of the new questions of the human, the documentary is a cinema in full effervescence and innovation. In Tunisia, this “other“ cinema also takes a turning point and becomes a “major” genre.
For this JCC 2019 edition (Nejib Ayed session), five Tunisian documentary films for recent production (2018-2019) are in official competition in the documentary section. These films were retained from the 40 works presented before an independent viewing and selection committee of documentary films are divided into three feature films and two documentary shorts.
The Independent Committee for the Selection of Documentary Films for the 2019 JCC (Session Nejib Ayed) consists of Mohamed Haddad, Mohsen Frigi, Khaled Agrebi, Olfa Chakroun and Amin Boukhris.
These films contribute in official competition, alongside the international selection of short films and documentary feature films for the following prices
- the Tanit d’Or, the best documentary short film,
- the Tanit d’Or, of the best documentary feature,
- The Silver Tanit of the best short -Documentary feature,
- The money of money for the best documentary feature,
- The Bronze Tanit of the best short -Documentary feature,

Tunisian films in official competition of JCC 2019 documentary feature films:
- A HAUNED PAST de Fatma Riahi (Tunisia-Qatar 2018)-90 ‘
A HAUNED PAST Or Absences is the first documentary feature by the Tunisian director Fatma Riahi.
Presented as a world premiere at the 2018 Amsterdam Idfa Documentary Festival, this film was selected at the biggest documentary film festivals.
A HAUNED PAST tells the story of a family whose trajectory is modeled on the great questions of this millennial beginning: jihadism, migratory problems, freedom and human rights. A portrait that tells, the Tunisian-Bosnian family life between 2005 to 2018. A radicalized Tunisian father, a Bosnian mother who is lost and three girls who try to find a place, a meaning and an identity. Yamina, Khadija and Imen pay the tribute of a war which is not theirs, but which determines their lives.
A HAUNED PAST was written and produced over 3 years by Fatma Riahi. This is the young film’s second film after her medium film Tunisia…. And the revolution continues in 2011.

Sami Tlili is director, professor of cinema and modern letters, and active member in the Tunisian Federation of Ciné-Clubs and the Tunisian Federation of amateur filmmakers. After three short films made between 2005 and 2008, he continued his training at the Varan workshops (Documentary Cinema School) in Paris. In 2012 his first documentary feature film Cursed be phosphate Competed in the “Long-films perspective” section. This film had the prize for “Best Arab Film” at the 6th International Film Festival of Abu Dhabi in 2012 and the “Best Documentary Research” prize at the Algiers Maghreb Cinema Festival in 2013.
On the transversal على العارضةselected in the 2019 JCC Documentary feature-footage section is his second participation in the festival. The documentary recounts the summer of 1978 in a tunisia of an appearance united in the joy of the Football World Cup (Argentina 1978). The national team is welcomed as a national hero, but popular jubilation hides a dark year between social tensions and violent and deadly police repression.

- Fathallah TV, 10 years old and a revolution later Wided Zoghlami (Tunisia 2019) – 80 ‘
A generation, five destinies, a revolution and a district under the gaze of Wided Zoghlami which films for 10 years the changes in a country in the making. A dive into the heart of Tunisia which is transformed through the journey of five young musicians. A reflection on learning freedom, on the role and place of art and culture. Fathallah TV, 10 years old and a revolution later is a voice carrier of a generation which today, ten years later, is still looking for itself, between an “everything that changes” and a “nothing that moves”.
Wided Zoghlami is a director and director. She graduated from the School of Cinema Arts (EDAC) in Tunis and the International School of Audiovisual Creation and Realization (EICAR), in Paris. She has a first short film to her credit Almost a pleasure (2007). Fathallah TV is his first documentary feature, produced by Ulysson. The film was selected to be part of the Takmil workshop, the 2018 “Carthage Pro” program and benefited from a production aid scholarship offered by the OIM World Immigration Organization.
Tunisian films in official competition of short Documentary films JCC 2019:
On the short side, the selection committee for the official JCC 2019 documentary film competition (Session Néjib Ayed) chose two films by two young Tunisian directors Fakhri El Ghezal and Youness Ben Slimane.
The two short films were in the official competition for the “Pardi di Domani” prize at the 2019 Locarno (Switzerland) Film Festival.
- أهل الكهف, the companions of the cave by Fakhri El Ghezal (Tunisia-2019)-20 ′
It is a travel account that Fakhri El Ghazel delivers, a flow of images and music that retrace the physical and spiritual path of two young Tunisian rappers Jojo M and Galaa … illegal immigration journey, which leads the artists of Mines of Redeyef to the streets of Nantes in France.
Shot in super 8 and black and white, this is the third documentary of Fakhri El Ghezal after Al-Ghouroub-The After (2016) and Héni Eltéli – I’m at your back (2017). Photographer, videographer and director, Fakhri El Ghezal has already exhibited his works (photos, video and digital facilities) in Beirut, Barcelona, Brussels, New York, Marseille and Bamako. His film The Caverne Companions is produced by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Tunisia.
- All Come from Dust – من طين from Younes Ben Slimane (2019) – 9 ‘
This first film by Younes Ben Slimane with “poetic test” looks is officially selected for the 2019 JCC (Nejib Ayed session) after having participated in the 72nd edition of the Locarno Film Festival in the Pardi di Domani section: Concorso Internazionale
With a biblical title Everything comes from dust and returns to dust is an exploration of the human-natural link with the magnificent South Tunisian south, the original land of the director. Younes Ben Slimane is an architect by training but his artistic vocation led him from photography to video and cinema.
