TIFF 2018 – Prix for the best Canadian short film for Ikhwène de Melyam JOOBEUR

The short film Ikhwène (Fraternity), written and produced by Tunisian Meryam Jobeur won the prize for the best Canadian short film (worth $ 10,000) at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This film is co -produced by Tunisia, Canada, Sweden and Qatar.

Synopsis
Mohamed is a hardened shepherd who lives in the Tunisian countryside with his wife and two sons. His life is shaken when his eldest son, Malik, secretly returns from Syria with a new wife named Rym, a mysterious Syrian who carries the niqab. Malik’s mother and young brothers are quick to accept Malik’s return, but Mohamed is uncomfortable with her presence and his potential radical influence on the family. The tension between the father and the son extends over three days until he reached a break point.

The jury gave him this award because “The film was masterfully executed, with daring ideas, rich textures and observations of nuanced characters, played by unforgettable actors. The film successfully explored complex personal and political themes with compassion for its characters. Using the intimate prism of a Tunisian family, the film was made with a sense of maturity that suggests a brilliant future for Meryam Joobeur ».
