Because I absolutely cannot be objective when it comes to Bourguiba, this is not a theatrical criticism !!
I went to see Raja Farhat’s play, “Bourguiba, last prison”, a room where I cried from start to finish !!
I cried everything that Bourguiba had built and which is falling into ruins currently !!
I cried the achievements that we are in the process of losing, I cried this boat called Tunisia which is drifting and that we see sink from day to day !!
The play itself is a monologue where Raja Farhat, with an excellent mimicry and gestures, humor and biting criticism, revives Bourguiba for three hours !!
Bourguiba tells us about his career, his positions, his life and his fight. But also of its weaknesses, its loves, its errors, and its disappointments.
A large place is devoted to religious references which allowed Bourguiba and his “comrades” to set up avant-garde laws such as the abolition of polygamy.
We can only love this man more and admire his intelligence and his erudition, and the enormous importance he gave to knowledge and culture, and we cannot help comparing him to the political leaders who have succeeded him and whose mediocrity is the main characteristic !!
These words from beyond the grave challenge us on the future of this country, it is as if this bourguiba resurrected the time of a play put in our hands a heavy responsibility, that of not allowing the work of his life destroyed and dilapidating his inheritance !!
The room was packed, we even added chairs to the back, and the public already conquered has applauded many times !!
This anthological piece should be played everywhere in Tunisia. Parents must take their children to see it, it is a very important part of the history of Tunisia that one tries to dirty and distort and that it is necessary to save. Raja Farhat, by reincarnating Bourguiba, did her “duty of reminiscence”. Stay with us, Tunisian citizens imbued with the values of the Republic and the rule of law, to do it !!
