The film between two / Take My Breath will represent Tunisia at Oscars 2025

The film “Between two/Take My Breath”, directed by Nada Mezni Hafaiedh, was selected to represent Tunisia at the 2025 Oscars in the category of the best international film. This decision was made by a committee brought together under the supervision of the National Center for Cinema and Image (CNCI).

The film tells the story of Chams, a 23 -year -old young woman living on a peaceful island in Tunisia. Shutchman and fashion designer, she is in love with a sailor. But her life changes when you discover her gender identity, forcing her to leave her island to settle in Tunis, in the hope of starting her life again. The film addresses strong themes such as identity and self -acceptance, through the course of Chams.

The distribution of the film brings together several renowned actors, including Amina Ben Ismail, Mohammed Mrad, Sana Ben Cheikh Larbi, Fatma Ben Saïdane, Fethi Akkari, Aymen Ben Hamida and Haifa Boulekbache.

Between two made its world premiere at the 39ᵉ International Warsaw Festival before going out in Tunisian theaters on October 25, 2023. The film has already won several distinctions, including that of the best fiction film at the Rotterdam Arab Film Festival and Gold Fifog at the Oriental FIM International Festival. Amina Ben Ismail, the main actress, also won two awards for her interpretation, one at the International Fim Oriental and the other at the Casablanca Arab Film Festival.

Before competing in the Oscars, the film will be presented at the 35ᵉ Festival of the Arab Fameck/Val de Fensch film in France, which begins on October 3, 2024. This new stage could further strengthen its international visibility before important announcements linked to the Oscars. Shortlists will be unveiled on December 17, 2024, followed by official appointments on January 17, 2025. The Oscar ceremony will be held on March 2, 2025 in Los Angeles.

Tunisian cinema has already shone in the Oscars with a nomination in the category of the best international film in 2020 for The man who sold his skin by Kaouther Ben Hania. In 2023, his film Olffa’s girls was part of the international shortlist and won an appointment in the category of the best documentary. With this new selection, Between two/Take My Breath Continue to wear the colors of Tunisian cinema high on the world scene.
