The El Gouna Film Festival, one of the most anticipated cinematographic events in the region, has just announced the postponement of its sixth edition which was to be held from October 13 to 20, by the official press release below:
“The El Gouna Film Festival postponed: amplify” Cinema for humanity “in the face of world challenges
In the light of the deeply worrying circumstances which led to the loss of innocent lives, the management of the El Gouna Film Festival made the decision to postpone the festival from October 27 to November 2, 2023. The GFF team remains committed to organizing the festival, taking advantage of this opportunity to strengthen and amplify our central theme, ” Cinema for humanity“. This theme promotes unity and empathy, and we are determined to weave it through all the activities of the festival.
We firmly believe in the deep power of cinema to bring people together, while also understanding the weight of the current situation and the importance of collective reflection. It is crucial that we offer a space for healing, understanding and solidarity.
Our commitment to highlight the impactful work of our talented youth and to underline the transformative nature of cinema remains unchanged.
We sincerely thank you for your understanding when we sail through these difficult times.
We look forward to the opportunity to welcome you to the 6th edition of the El Gouna Film Festival.

By postponing its sixth edition, the El Gouna film festival expresses its solidarity towards the Palestinians and all of humanity. Under the theme ” Cinema for humanity, He highlights the power of cinema to unite and inspire collective reflection, thus strengthening the importance of fundamental values. Festival -goers are looking forward to this film celebration dedicated to peace.
What is a shame is that the new period of the El Gouna festival almost perfectly coincides with the dates of Carthage’s cinematographic days (JCC), another major cinematic event scheduled from October 28 to November 4, 2023. This superimposition of dates poses a dilemma for cinema professionals, in particular critics and journalists who intended to cover the two festivals.
For many cinema professionals, choosing between El Gouna and the JCC is a real logistical puzzle. The management of the El Gouna festival should have taken into account the importance of the JCCs and the impact of this overlap on festival -goers. An extension of one week’s postponement might have been possible to avoid this delicate situation.
