The climb of the Amazigh

Important news fact: Tunisia is hosting this week a Berber symposium this week, practically for the first time since independence.

This Tunisian Amazigh “revival” was clearly made possible thanks to the revolution of January 14, 2011.

Indeed, repressed under Bourguiba and Ben Ali, the Berber language and culture have been almost erased in our country.

This climb of the Amazigh has experienced several recent illustrations, including the constitution of a very active cultural association.

The Berber symposium is organized by the Maghreb Study Center in Tunis (CEMAT), March 6, 2011 from 1:30 p.m. Several communications will be presented, including those of Khadija ben Saïdane (Amazighity at the heart of democratic changes) and Walid Ben Omrane (the Amazigh -speaking community of Djerba and the revolutions in the Maghreb) are eagerly awaited.
