The long -awaited ceremony of the 2024 Oscars is fast approaching, and the forecasts are already in turmoil. Like every year, looks are mainly turned to the films named in the most prestigious categories, and this edition is no exception. Having passionately scrutinized each work in the running for the Oscars of the best film, the best director, and the best international film, I allow myself to share my impressions and my predictions for this year.
In my opinion, The area of interest/The Zone of Interest,, Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festivaland which accumulates no less than five appointments, undoubtedly deserves each of these honors, as it deeply marked me. Directed with an undeniable mastery by Jonathan Glazer, this feature film plunges the spectator into the heart of the holocaust, exploring with a rare sensitivity the darkness of this dark period of history. Adapted from the eponymous novel by Martin Amis, the scenario transcends borders to offer a deep reflection on human nature and tacit complicity. The daring artistic direction, neat visual aesthetics, and immersive sound design make The Zone of Interest An unforgettable cinematographic experience, each nomination of which testifies to the exceptional and original quality.
American Fictionwith its five nominations also, is positioned as a must in contemporary cinema. Directed by Cord Jefferson and carried by the remarkable performance of Jeffrey Wright, this film goes far beyond entertainment to question racial stereotypes and artistic authenticity. In the middle of the awards, American Fiction is looming as a serious pretender to the Oscar for the best film, offering a cinematographic experience as captivating as it is intellectually stimulating.
Among the other films in the running for the Oscar for best film, Poor creatures/Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos, just like The Zone of Intereststands out for its daring and singular realization. With 11 nominations to his credit, this film undoubtedly deserves to win several Oscars, including that of the best actress for Emma Stone. His remarkable interpretation in a complex and disproportionate role testifies to his talent and his ability to transform throughout the film.
Poor creatures is also in the running for the Oscars of the best suitable scenario, the best assembly and the best decor. However, for this Oscar for the best decor, the competition is tight, especially with the film Barbie from Greta Gerwig. The latter also deserves recognition, because he manages to brilliantly recreate the magical universe of Barbie toys, transporting spectators to a world of childhood dreams. I think the attention paid to the decorations of Barbiethought in their smallest detail, contributed greatly to the success of the film.
With regard to the Oscar for the best achievement, the appointments bear witness to remarkable talent and diversity. However, once again, my preferences go to Jonathan Glazer for his exceptional work on The Zone of Interest and at Yorgos Lanthimos for its daring realization in Poor creatures.
On the side of the Oscar for best international film, The Zone of Interest continues to shine. This film is really universal and talks about a current subject: the complicity and silence of people in the face of the misfortunes of other peoples, including in front of a genocide. The teacher/the teachers’ lounge From Ilker Çatak also stands out, and could also create a surprise. But I remain perplexed as to the appointment of The Snow Circle/Society of the Snow From Ja Bayona who, in my humble opinion, fails to bring novelty to a subject already explored many times. What is the use of yet another film on an event if it does not bring at least another point of view or addresses the subject from another angle?
Finally, although I cannot judge all the films named for the Oscar for best documentary, since I did not have the chance to see them all, I am convinced that Olffa’s girls Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania is likely to win. The hybrid structure between documentary and fiction as well as the numerous prizes won testify to the deserved success of this Tunisian film. I hope very strongly, although the various echoes give a lot of chances to the film 20 days in Marioupol/20 Days In Mariupolproduced by MSTYSLAV Chernov, which is today at the heart of the news.
The preferences I have expressed previously reflect my personal opinion and could diverge from the choices of the members of the Oscar Academy. For example, unlike my wishes, and according to the predictions of the specialized press, the film Oppenheimer From Christian Nolan, who has 13 nominations, seems to be the favorite to win several Oscars, including those of the best film and the best achievement. However, with regard to the Oscar for the best international film, the indisputable favorite is The Zone of Interestand sincerely, it is the film that deserves it most among the names named.
A few days before the ceremony, excitement rises and anticipation is felt: are we going to attend surprises, reversals of the situation? What films will the privilege have to win the most prestigious distinctions? This year, the 2024 Oscars promise a celebration of cinema rich in emotions and suspense. I can’t wait to discover the winning winners and moments of this long -awaited evening.
