The Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences (The Academy) has just unveiled the list of movies and cinema professionals who are appointed to compete in 2019 Oscars in 24 different categories.

In fact, no big surprises. We expected these appointments more or less.

The Mexican film Romaproduced by Alfonso Cuaron is the big favorite, he is nominated in 10 different categories, including that of best film in a foreign language. He therefore competitions the Lebanese film Raw from Nadine Labaki.

Bohemian Rhapsodydirected by Bryan Singer and who tells the tumultuous life of singer Freddie Marcury is nominated in 5 categories, including the best actor for the young Egyptian-American Rami Malek who is breathtaking in this role.

Five of the nominated films had been scheduled for The 40th edition of the Cairo International Festival which was held from November 20 to 29, 2019: Green Book (5 nominations) had been the festival opening film, Roma (10 nominations) and Blackkklansman (6 appointments) were in official selection outside competition, At Eternity’s Gate (1 appointment) in special projections outside competition and The Wife (1 appointment) in the International Panorama section. Which once again proves the quality of the selection of this festival.

Syrian documentary Of Fathers and Sons of Talal Derki, who had gone empty -handed from the 2018 JCC is nominated in the best documentary category. And it is indeed an excellent film which deserves to win an Oscar.
