The ThĂ©Ăątre de l’OpĂ©ra de Tunis will present a Tunisian version of the emblematic work of Giuseppe Verdi, La Traviata, Friday May 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday May 11 at 6 p.m., on the stage of the CitĂ© de la Culture Chedli Klibi.
Fruit of a cultural partnership between Tunisia and Italy, this initiative is carried by the ThĂ©Ăątre de l’OpĂ©ra de Tunis, via the Ballets and Choreographic Arts and Music and Opera poles, with the support of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Tunisia.
This ambitious project, launched in 2023, provides for the staging of two major operas. After “Carmen” in 2024, it was the turn of Traviata, the culmination of a cycle of artistic residences, the last of which was held from April 7 to May 7, 2025.
This Tunisian adaptation mobilizes the Tunisian Symphony Orchestra, the Choir and Solists of the Tunis Opera, as well as the Ballet de l’OpĂ©ra, which brings for the first time a choreographic dimension to this classic work.
Inspired by the novel La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils, La Traviata stages the tragic fate of Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan who sacrifices her happiness for love. Sick and rejected, she died alone, shortly after late reconciliation with her lover Alfredo.
The staging is based on the Livret of Francesco Maria Piave in the Ricordi edition of 1964. The musical direction is provided by Nicoletta Conti, accompanied by Carlo Argelli for the preparation of the choir. The orchestra is led by Chadi Garfi, and Sihem Belkhodja supervises the ballet.
The staging is signed Stefano Vizioli, with a choreography by Pigi Vanelli, videos of Wael Mansour, lights created by Mohamed Hached, and a scenography orchestrated by Kamel Dkhil, responsible for sets and costumes.
