Steve McQueen, a 44-year-old British director, won the Oscar for the best film for “12 years a slave” yesterday, an adaptation of the autobiography “twelve years of slavery”, by Solomon Northup, a black violinist born free, kidnapped during the Civil War, to serve as a slave in cotton plantations in the South of the United States.
“We all deserve to survive but above all to live,” said Steve McQueen, when receiving this trophy, taking up a replica from his film. “I dedicate this film to all those who have suffered from slavery and the 21 million who still suffer it today,” he added.
Produced in particular by Brad Pitt, “12 Years a Slave” also won the Oscar for the best suitable scenario and that of the best supporting female role.
