The Tunisian and Arab cultural scene is in mourning after the death, this Wednesday, April 30, 2025, of Anouar Chaafi, director, professor and major figure of the theater.
This fourth art enthusiast leaves behind almost forty years of creation, teaching and artistic commitment. He had distinguished himself with striking works, including the most recent, “The nightmare of Einstein”.
Founder of the Médenine Experimental Theater in 1989, he launched the National Festival of the Experimental Theater in 1992 and directed several cultural institutions, notably the Tunisian National Theater.
A recognized academic, he trained generations of artists and published reference work on the Tunisian and Arabic theatrical scene.
His departure leaves an immense void in the country’s artistic and intellectual landscape.
