In about two weeks, the 29 will startth Edition of Carthage’s Cinematographic Days (JCC), which will take place from November 3 to 10, 2018.

During the press conference held yesterday morning at the Cité de la Culture, Mr.Nejib Ayed, director general of the festival and Ms. Chiraz Latiri, director of the National Cinema and Image Center (CNCI), partner of the JCC, presented this new edition and gave some interesting figures for this greater cultural event in the country which will receive more than 350 foreign guests this year.

M.Ayed first recalled that although it is the 29th Edition, the festival is now 52 years old, since born in 1966. It has also announced that it was decided only from this year, and to avoid all confusion, the numbering of editions will be abandoned and will give way to a new name which will only include the year. For this edition so we will talk about JCC 2018.

On 800 films submitted to the various festival commissions, 206 representatives 47 countries, were selected:
– 54 Arab films mostly produced in 2018;
– 44 films in competition, representing 19 countries (13 fiction feature films, 11 documentary feature films, 12 short fictional films and 8 documentary short films);
– 18 films will be in the first Arab or African projection;
– 14 female directors;
– 4 films in special projections;
– 61 Tunisian films submitted;
– 9 Tunisian films in official competition, 3 have already been selected from major festivals like the Cannes Film Festival and the Toronto Festival;
– 23 Tunisian films in the “Regards on Tunisian cinema” section.

Thanks to the opening of the City of Culture, the number of cinemas has increased compared to previous editions: 19 rooms in Tunis (including an outdoor room at Avenue Habib Bourguiba) and 4 rooms in Nabeul, Sfax, Kasserine and Siliana.

To avoid the long lines of expectations in front of the cinemas and the huge projection delays, it has been decided that there will only be 3 projections per day and per room, with an interval of at least one hour between two projections to allow outgoing and incoming spectators to circulate calmly.

The opening and fence ceremonies will be held at the Opera (Cité de la Culture).

In 2017, despite the 36 counters, there was a big problem with regard to the sale of tickets. In 2018, the number of counters increases to 42:
– 19 counters in cinemas (9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.);
– 10 at Avenue Habib Bourguiba (from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.);
– 2 at the City of Culture;
– 5 to post office located at Avenue Habib Bourguiba and surroundings;
– 4 at the Africa hotel for guests;
– 2 at the press center for accredited journalists.

You can buy tickets at all counters, 48 hours in advance, with a maximum of 3 tickets per person per day.

30% of tickets will be sold remotely on the Festival website.

With the exception of members of the various juries and organizers, all spectators, including those who wear badges, will have to be provided with tickets.

As in 2017, the ticket price is 3 dinars for the public and 1.5 dinar for students.

In 2017, there were tickets sold at the black market, with prices that have reached 30 dinars for a ticket. For this edition, the festival management will try to make it impossible.

The “Focus” section, initiated the previous session, will this year have Honors’ guests Iraq, Senegal, Brazil and India (51 films and 80 guests, between artists, professionals and journalists).

– 9 long and 9 short films;

This 2018 edition will also be rich in cultural events outside the cinema. She will see the participation of street artists during shows planned for Avenue Habib Bourguiba from November 1 to 10, 2018:
– 135 artists (39 foreigners and 96 Tunisians);
– 53 animation events (street entertainment, musicians, film screenings, parade of Iraqi costumes, dancers, etc.).

As with the two previous editions, there will be a 600 -seat outdoor performance hall, which will include a music show daily and two film screenings. A total of 16 films, some of which from the 4 countries in the Focus section.

Two shops will also be installed on Avenue Habib Bourguiba:
– 1 boutique be tounsi to sell Tunisian craft products;
– 1 JCC store to sell items from the festival and its partners.

The festival consolidates its desire to open even more towards cinema professionals thanks to its Carthage Pro platform and its 5 sections:
– The Chabaka network for the development of co -production projects and films;
– the Takmil network which supports films in the postproduction phase;
– The Master Class: Three Master Class will be organized this year, one with the composer of Tunisian film music Amin Bouhafa, another with the Lebanese film critic Ibrahim Elariss and a third with the Chadian filmmaker Mohamed Salah Haroun;
– the international conference on “Tax Shelter and new methods of financing cinema” which will take place on November 5;
– Carthage Talks, which will organize a series of panels on the cinema industry, including a panel on the relationship between international producers and sellers and a panel on violence against women in the cinema in the presence of Actress Hend Sabry. Carthage’s Talks will be open to the public.

As in 2017, a 16 -page daily (8 in Arabic and 8 in French) will be distributed free of charge. The moviegoers will find the news of the festival there and especially a criticism of the films that will be screened.

Despite a very tight budget (3,500,000 dinars), the festival management has tried to concoct a rich and diverse program that respects both the policy and philosophy of this always militant Arab and African festival, and which can also satisfy its very numerous and very demanding audience.
