For the fourth consecutive year and on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival, the presentation of the next edition of Carthage cinematographic days (JCC) which will take place from October 26 to November 2, 2019, held yesterday during a press conference held at the Tunisian pavilion in Cannes.
Journalists, film critics, producer, distributors, festival directors and other cinema professionals, including the Senegalese screenwriter, director and producer Moussa Toure, the Egyptian director Amir Ramses and Tunisian producer Dorra Bouchoucha, many have responded to the invitation sent to them.
Mr.Nejib Ayed, executive director of the JCC since 2017, began by recalling that the festival has existed since 1966, but that until 2014, it had been biennial. It was only since 2015 that it has become annual. The next edition will be the 30th. But from this year, we will no longer talk about edition, but years. The next edition will therefore be the JCC 53, the age of the festival.
Having been hosted for 52 years by various institutions, such as the National Library or the CNCI, Mr.Nejib Ayed welcomed that since the inauguration of the new City of Culture in March 2018, the JCC has finally had a seat and therefore their own offices, and above all a permanent team that works all year round to organize a real festival. The work has been much easier and effective for much!
Mr.Nejib Ayed also recalled that although the JCCs were the first Arab-African festival, he has remained very modern and his objectives have not changed since 1966. There have been attempts to transform it a little, either by adding glitter or trying to open it a little more on the Mediterranean, but these attempts have failed and there was a return to the sources and The creation of this festival, namely:
- Only African and Arab films can be selected in competition;
- The festival is open to Asia and Latin America;
- The festival is militant, and not only in the political sense of the term;
- The festival is a kind of platform for helping and promoting African and Arab films and helping young talents.
It is for this reason that since 2015, Carthage pro It was created to essentially allow young filmmakers to present their work and above all meet Arab and African professionals and exchange with them their experiences.
Carthage Pro includes 5 sections:
- Chabaka, which is a development and production workshop;
- Takmil, which is a post production workshop, and moreover most of the helped films have generally had a great career in the biggest festivals and have been distributed everywhere;
- The International Conference On a different subject each year. In 2019, the theme chosen will be financial and economic copyright. In our hacking countries, how to protect copyright? So what should we do?
- The Carthage’s Talks: In 2013, there will be three different panels concerning the profession, one of which will be for training.
- Masters classes : The goal is to allow young people who come out of schools to meet and know the oldest.
New for JCC 2019:
“” The programming will be magnificent in 2019, it is a promise “Said Mr.nejib Ayed,” Especially with regard to Tunisian cinema which is in an exceptional year in an exceptional year and which will also be present in at least four major festivals: Cannes, Venice, Toronto and San Sébastian (Spain) ».
A section for diaspora filmmakers:
A new section has been specially created for diaspora filmmakers. Indeed, several filmmakers of Arab or African origin, having only the nationality of their countries of reception, could not see their films programmed at the JCC, which is unfair, especially that several of these films are very important.
In 2019, this new section will be out of competition for a test, but we could in the future think of making it a competitive section, or even creating a specific festival for the diaspora.
Virtual reality:
The JCCs open to virtual reality. As well at the Cité de la Culture as at Avenue Habib Bourguiba, spectators will be able to know virtual reality, both in terms of films and in terms of industry.
A focus on the documentary film:
The year 2019 will be that of the documentary. In addition to a large conference in which several foreign guests will participate, we will try to make a sort of inventory on documentary films, and this moreover in collaboration with all the workshops. The JCC 2019 will be the place of the documentary film!
Guest countries of honor:
This year, the four guest of honor are:
- An African country: Nigeria
- An Asian country: Japan
- A South America country: Chile
- An Arab country: Lebanon
These invitations will be available in focus on the cinemas of these countries, in dance and music shows in the street for the general public and even in national evenings for festival -goers with the culinary arts of these features.
