Aïcha de Mehdi Barsaoui wins the prize for the best Mediterranean film at La Mostra de Venise

Tunisian cinema continues to shine on the international scene thanks to the film “Aïcha”, directed by Mehdi M. Barsaoui, which has just won the prestigious prize for the best Mediterranean film at the Venice Mostra 2024, all sections combined. This triumph is a brilliant recognition for the film team, and particularly for its director, who once again inscribes his name among the emblematic figures of Mediterranean cinema.

In official competition in the “Orizzonti” section of the 81st Venice Mostra,, Aïcha Mark a new turning point in Mehdi M.Barsaoui’s career. The film brings together a talented casting made up of Fatma Sfar, Nidhal Saadi, Yasmine Dimassi and Hela Ayed, and is produced by Habib Attia de Cinétéfilms and Marc Irmer of Dolce Vita Films, as part of a co -production involving Tunisia, France, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Aïcha is the second feature film by Mehdi M. Barsaoui to be selected in official competition in Venice, after the success ofA son In 2019, which had been doubly awarded. This return to the Italian lagoon testifies to the constant evolution and the growing recognition of Barsaoui’s work on the international scene.

Aïcha Tell the story of Aya, a young woman stuck in a dreary life and without perspective in Tozeur, in the south of Tunisia. After surviving a tragic accident, she decides to disappear and reinvent herself a new life in Tunis. However, her new start is compromised when she becomes the main witness to a police blunder. This poignant drama explores the themes of self -reinvention, the quest for freedom, and the personal and societal challenges encountered by women in Tunisia.

Born in 1984 in Tunis, Mehdi M. Barsaoui graduated in assembly of the Higher Institute of Multimedia Arts in Tunis. He then continued his training in Italy, where he graduated from Bologna Dams. Before embarking on feature films, Barsaoui stood out with three award-winning short films in several international festivals.

His first feature film, A sonmarked a remarkable beginning on the international scene, with a world first in official competition at the 76th Mostra of Venice, where he was doubly rewarded. The film was distributed in around twenty countries, was multi-printed internationally, and won the first César for a Tunisian film, establishing Mehdi M. Barsaoui as a major figure in contemporary cinema.

With Aïchathe young director continues his exploration of complex and universal themes, and continues to wear the colors of Tunisian cinema high on the world. Recognition in Venice 2024 further strengthens his reputation, making him one of the most promising directors of his generation.
