Health: Nuclear medicine becomes a medical specialty in its own right

Tunisia is taking a strategic step in the field of health by establishing nuclear medicine as an independent medical specialty. This decision is part of a national plan aimed at modernizing diagnosis, strengthening the provision of care and reducing regional inequalities.

The Tunisian government has marked a major turning point in the organization of specialized care by establishing nuclear medicine as an independent medical discipline. The announcement was made at the end of a working session chaired yesterday by the Minister of Health, Mustapha Ferjani, devoted to the structuring and development of this sector with high technological value.

Deployment of cutting-edge technologies

This orientation aims to provide nuclear medicine with a clear scientific and institutional foundation. A specialized technical committee will be set up to ensure coordination, planning and supervision of the development of the discipline, in consultation with the structures concerned and professionals in the sector.

The plan provides for the gradual generalization of modern nuclear medicine techniques throughout the territory. The extension of the national positron emission tomography (PET – PET Scan) network is among the priorities, with the aim of significantly reducing waiting times and improving access to precision diagnosis.

Towards self-sufficiency in radiopharmaceuticals

The health authorities also intend to strengthen the national production of radiopharmaceuticals in order to achieve self-sufficiency and secure the supply of hospital structures. This approach is part of a logic of health sovereignty and reduction of external dependence.

The creation of specialized services in the interior regions constitutes another central axis of the plan. The objective is to correct regional disparities and guarantee equitable access to nuclear medicine examinations and treatments.

Patient scanning and monitoring

A radiological information system (RIS), integrating teleradiology solutions, will be deployed to optimize the patient journey. This system aims to improve the coordination of care, ensure continuous monitoring and strengthen the quality and speed of medical services.

The Ministry of Health reaffirmed its total commitment to this project, emphasizing the central role of nuclear medicine in improving diagnosis and developing advanced therapeutic strategies. This reform is part of a broader dynamic of modernization of the health system and consolidation of national medical sovereignty.
