Tunisia: Civil protection preparations for New Year’s Eve

During the school holidays and as the end-of-year celebrations approach, Civil Protection has put in place an exceptional system to strengthen road safety and reduce response times in the event of an accident. Since the start of the holiday period, ten external Civil Protection points have been deployed on motorways, major roads and main routes experiencing heavy traffic.

Guest, Monday, December 22, 2025, of the program “Le Boulevard tunisien”, the head of the sub-department of operations and monitoring at the Operations Directorate of the National Office of Civil Protection, Lieutenant-Colonel Khalil Mechri, specified that this system will be considerably reinforced on the occasion of administrative New Year’s Eve. The number of exterior points will then increase to 36, a figure that he described as high and indicative of the level of preparation of the teams to secure the roads and tourist areas during this sensitive period.

Alongside road risks, Civil Protection is sounding the alarm about the increase in domestic accidents, particularly cases of gas poisoning. According to Khalil Mechri, the emergency units intervened 118 times during the months of November and December, providing assistance to 252 people who were victims of gas leaks or misuse.

Gas leaks

The causes of these incidents are mainly linked to gas leaks, which represent 52% of the cases recorded. The use of heating appliances is the cause of 10% of accidents, while around 30% of cases of asphyxiation are due to the use of gas inside bathrooms, a particularly dangerous practice.

Faced with these worrying figures, Civil Protection calls on citizens to be extra vigilant, by strictly avoiding the use of heating means or gas in enclosed spaces, particularly bathrooms, and by scrupulously respecting safety rules. A call for prevention deemed essential to preserve lives and avoid avoidable tragedies, particularly during the winter season.
