On December 18, 2025, Saito Jun officially took office as the new Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Japan to Tunisia, after his arrival in Tunis on December 15, 2025. That day, he was received at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad by Mohamed Ali Naftiminister in charge of the department, to whom he handed over the figurative copies of his credentials, marking the start of his diplomatic mission in Tunisia.
This official ceremony constituted an important step in the diplomatic relationship between Tokyo and Tunis, at the dawn of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of bilateral relations, which will be commemorated in 2026. The two parties reaffirmed their desire to strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries in various fields.
A long-term diplomat
Little official biographical information is yet publicly available regarding Mr. Saito Jun in his new role as ambassador to Tunisia. However, elements taken from various international sources make it possible to situate his professional profile:
- Saito Jun is a career Japanese diplomat having held various responsibilities within the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs during his career. According to professional data related to international conferences, the diplomat served as Consul General of Japan in Montreal and served in several Japanese diplomatic missions, including in Brussels, New Delhi, Paris, as well as at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations in New York. He also headed central departments of the ministry, such as the Directorate of Public Diplomacy, the Directorate of European Affairs and that of Communication and Press Relations.
- Still according to these professional references, Saito Jun reportedly joined the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988, after studying at the University of Tokyo, and is married with two children.
