Motorcycles are involved in an alarming share of fatal accidents in Tunisia. According to official data, they alone account for more than four out of ten deaths, in a context marked by excessive speed and insufficient control of certain roads.
Two-wheelers, leading cause of road deaths
Motorcycles are involved in at least 42% of fatal accidents recorded in Tunisia. This figure was communicated by Colonel Aymen Ben Ibrahim, rapporteur of the steering committee of the National Multisectoral Road Safety Strategy at the Ministry of the Interior, during an intervention on National Radio.
Behind motorcycles, pedestrians constitute the second most exposed category, representing nearly 25% of people killed on the roads. A reality which highlights the increased vulnerability of unprotected users to road risks.
Excessive speed and uncontrolled areas involved
According to the official, two-wheelers are among the most dangerous means of transport due to the low level of protection of their drivers and passengers. In the event of a collision, the impact is often fatal, unlike occupants of light vehicles benefiting from a more robust safety structure.
Colonel Ben Ibrahim also highlighted a worrying paradox: despite an overall drop in the number of accidents compared to previous years, the number of deaths continues to increase. This development is mainly attributed to the excessive speed at the time of impact.
The lack of control on certain roads, particularly between urban and rural areas, as well as risky behavior, are among the major factors explaining the persistent increase in road deaths, according to road safety officials.
