The criminal chamber specializing in financial corruption cases has decided to postpone the hearing concerning Chawki Tabib, former president of the National Anti-Corruption Authority (INLUCC) and former president of the National Bar Association. The postponement comes following an appeal presented by the defense to the Court of Cassation.
The defense appeals to the Court of Cassation
Chawki Tabib’s lawyers appeared before the competent court to submit a cassation appeal against the decision of the indictment chamber having ordered his referral to the specialized criminal chamber.
The defense requested that the examination of the file be deferred until the Court of Cassation rules on this appeal, in order to guarantee the procedural rights of their client.
A hearing postponed until February
Granting the defense’s request, the court set the next hearing for next February. This decision allows the court to rule subsequently on the merits of the case, while respecting the legal procedure governing appeals in criminal matters.
It was last June that the indictment chamber specializing in financial corruption cases, reporting to the Court of Appeal of Tunis, decided to refer Chawki Tabib to the criminal chamber of the Court of First Instance of Tunis.
This decision is part of an instruction relating to the management of the INLUCC during the period when Chawki Tabib was president. The charges against him concern suspicions of financial embezzlement and administrative mismanagement.
