The winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, Narges Mohammadi, was “violently arrested” this Friday, December 12 in Iran while she participated in a ceremony in tribute to lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, who died in circumstances considered suspicious.

Aged 53, the journalist and human rights activist had been on provisional release for medical reasons since the end of 2024. Her arrest was confirmed by her defense and denounced by her support committee.

A brutal arrest in the middle of a ceremony

According to the Narges Mohammadi Foundation, the opponent was “violently arrested” by security forces during a ceremony marking seven days since the death of Khosrow Alikordi, a 45-year-old lawyer specializing in the defense of demonstrators arrested during the 2022 uprising.

An emblematic figure of civil resistance

Narges Mohammadi, regularly imprisoned for almost twenty years for her positions against the mullahs’ regime, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her fight against the oppression of women and for the defense of fundamental rights. His most recent conviction, served in part, was on charges of propaganda against the state.
