The cardiology department of the Charles Nicolle hospital marked, this Monday, a major breakthrough for Tunisian medicine. A specialized team managed to carry out, for the first time in Tunisia, an intervention intended to treat severe calcifications of the coronary arteries using the intravascular shock wave technique.
The patient, aged 58, suffered from a severe and heavily calcified narrowing of a coronary artery. Doctors first fragmented the calcifications using an intracoronary lithotripsy balloon, before inserting an active stent to restore normal blood flow.
The intervention was carried out by Professor Habib Ben Ahmed and the catheterization team, under the supervision of Professor Laila Bezdah, in coordination with Professor Aymen Abbassi from the clinical pharmacy department.
Continuous progress
In a press release, the Ministry of Health welcomed this success, stressing that it confirms Tunisia’s continued progress in interventional cardiology and illustrates the capacity of national skills to master some of the most advanced technologies in the world to treat complex heart diseases.
