Gabès hit by toxic fumes: New episode of asphyxiation in schools

Monday December 1, 2025, several educational establishments in the city center of Gabès were affected by toxic fumes. The Stop Pollution Collective said the number of affected students increased from thirty to fifty throughout the day, with symptoms ranging from difficulty breathing to headaches and nausea. The children were taken care of at the Mohamed Sassi University Hospital.

Toxic gases dispersed towards the city center

Ahmed Chebli, member of the Tunisian League for Human Rights in Gabès, denounced Tuesday on Jawhara FM the crisis management in hospitals. According to him, the services were overwhelmed, some parents refused to admit their children, denouncing treatments considered unworthy, and the structures cruelly lacked the means to deal with these emergencies.

The violent winds would have favored the spread of gases to the central districts, whereas they previously remained confined to the outskirts of the Chemical Group. This new dispersion has intensified the anger of residents, exasperated by the recurrence of incidents and the absence of lasting measures.

Mobilization of families

Some parents transferred their children to other establishments to protect them. The Stop Pollution Collective calls for urgent intervention and reliable medical diagnoses.
