President Kaïs Saïed received, Tuesday, November 25 at the Carthage Palace, the Minister of the Interior Khaled Nouri to discuss the waste situation in the regions of the country. The Head of State denounced an accumulation which he considers abnormal despite the resources mobilized. He called for strict enforcement of the law against failures and uncivil behavior.

Waste, congestion and lack of execution: the head of state raises his voice

During the meeting, President Saïed called for intensifying garbage collection operations in all regions, describing a landscape marked by persistent piles of household waste and rubble. He criticized “a lack of execution” while, according to him, the technical and logistical means were provided to resolve the problem.

The Head of State recalled the civic momentum observed after the 2019 presidential election, when spontaneous cleaning campaigns were organized in several cities. He accused “lobbies” of having tried to sabotage these initiatives and of fueling today a desired degradation of the urban environment. According to Saïed, the restoration of a clean public space requires collective awareness and the determination to refuse behavior that is disrespectful to the urban environment.

Reactions and announced firmness

The president ordered disciplinary and legal action to be taken against those found negligent. He affirms that the law must be applied without leniency in the face of incivility, whether for domestic waste or for illegal dumping of construction materials.

The message sent to local authorities and competent structures is clear: restore order, sanction breaches and restore cleanliness as a public standard.

Waste management has been a recurring subject in several municipalities for years, between logistical failures, sectoral strikes, saturation of landfills and political tensions around responsibilities. Saïed’s call comes in a climate where the state of streets and neighborhoods is regularly denounced by citizens and where the environmental issue is entering the public debate.
