On the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the assassination of Farhat Hached, an emblematic figure of Tunisian trade unionism, the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) is calling for a major commemorative march in Greater Tunis on December 4.

The mobilization aims to pay tribute to the founder of the trade union center and to recall his role in the anti-colonial struggle and for workers’ rights.

A symbolic journey through the heart of the capital

According to a press release from the UGTT, the rally will begin at 11 a.m. at Mohamed Ali Hammi Square, before successively traveling along Avenue Mongi Slim, Bab Souika and Avenue Bab Bnet, to end at the mausoleum of Farhat Hached at the Kasbah.

The general secretary of the UGTT, Noureddine Tabboubi, will deliver a speech in tribute to the union leader, highlighting his commitment to social justice and his historic role in the construction of modern trade unionism in Tunisia.

Farhat Hached: a symbol of trade unionism and independence

Founder of the UGTT in 1946, the first trade union organization in Africa and the Arab world, Farhat Hached established himself as a central figure in the fight against French colonialism.

His assassination, on December 5, 1952, attributed to the colonial organization “La Main Rouge”, marked the history of the Tunisian workers’ movement and remains a strong symbol of resistance and courage.
