The bail required for the release of businessman Marouane Mabrouk could have been reduced to 800 million dinars, according to sources close to the case, reported by Mosaique fm.
A possible revision of the deposit
Informed sources indicated Tuesday morning that the Criminal Chamber specializing in financial corruption cases, at the Court of First Instance of Tunis, may have decided to reduce Marouane Mabrouk’s bail, initially set at one billion dinars, to 800 million.
Marouane Mabrouk appeared in court on Monday, accompanied by Adel Grar, former general manager of Karama Holding, and a third defendant, all currently in detention.
The case concerns the lifting of the freezing of his assets with the European Union in 2017, a decision which had raised numerous questions about the management of assets and political influence.
Political figures in the viewfinder
The list of defendants includes several political figures: Samir Taïeb and Riadh Mouakher, former ministers, at large, Youssef Chahed, former head of government, on the run, Mabrouk Korchid, former minister, also wanted.
If bail were indeed to be reduced, it could reflect a compromise between judicial requirements and the financial realities of the defendant. Tunisian public opinion is closely following the case, which is reviving discussions on the practices of lifting international fund freezes and the slowness of procedures against economic and political figures.
