Tunisia: Chinese ambassador insists on sovereignty and the question of Taiwan

Invited this Thursday, November 20, 2025 on Mosaique FM, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Tunisia, Wan Li, highlighted the convergence of views between Beijing and Tunis on principles considered fundamental: the protection of national sovereignty and opposition to any form of foreign interference.

According to him, China and Tunisia support each other in issues affecting their essential interests and official concerns.

The ambassador took advantage of his visit to return at length to the question of Taiwan, recalling resolution 2758 adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1971, which recognizes the government of Beijing as the sole legitimate representative of China. He reaffirmed that according to the official Chinese position, there is only one China and Taiwan is an integral part of it.

Beyond the diplomatic argument, this speech illustrates the importance that Beijing attaches to clarifying and repeating its doctrine in an international context marked by regional tensions and strategic repositioning.

China seeks not only to reiterate its red lines, but also to consolidate its alliances, particularly with countries that share its stated attachment to the principle of sovereignty and non-interference.

For Tunisia, this declared proximity remains a political signal: it is part of a bilateral relationship made up of economic cooperation, but also of a discursive alignment on certain sensitive geopolitical issues.

This statement is also part of a broader Chinese communications strategy aimed at countering divergent interpretations of Resolution 2758 and preventing any international normalization of Taiwan. By publicly emphasizing Tunisian support on this point, Beijing is symbolically strengthening its position against countries which contest or qualify its reading of the UN text.

For Tunis, the position expressed remains consistent with its traditional diplomatic line, but it places it more clearly in the network of allies with which China seeks to rally official support.
