The Ministry of Religious Affairs confirmed that Tunisia will send 10,982 pilgrims during the 2026 Hajj season, including 1,000 Tunisians residing abroad and 9,982 registered inside the country.

The announcement was made in Kairouan, during a study day devoted to the religious supervision of future pilgrims, with the clarification that no quota increase was granted this year.

A stable distribution despite the increase in demand

Anis Mezzoughi, responsible for directing the general administration of Hajj and Umrah, indicated that Tunisia did not benefit from an increase in quota for 2026. He however expressed the hope of seeing this figure revised upwards in the coming seasons, taking into account the increase in the population revealed by the last census, which would reduce the years of waiting for thousands of candidates.

The mandatory medical check-up phase is now complete. The ministry’s services are currently preparing the final lists of selected pilgrims as well as the waiting list intended to fill any possible withdrawals.

Training, supervision and preparation of pilgrims

The study day, chaired by the Minister of Religious Affairs Ahmed Bouhali and the governor of Kairouan, brought together regional directors and preachers from all regions. The interventions focused on organizational measures, legal issues linked to the Hajj as well as the specificities of women’s pilgrimage.

Mezzoughi recalled the importance of spiritual, health and logistical support, inviting future pilgrims to follow the instructions of preachers in their regions, to complete administrative procedures via the one-stop shop and to prepare themselves psychologically, physically, materially and religiously. He also called for carefully following the ministry’s communiqués regarding the next stages of preparation.
