Tunisian Wafa Masghouni won a bronze medal yesterday at the Women’s World Taekwondo Championships in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. The reigning -60 kg world champion thus confirms her status among the world elite.

This particularly successful edition brings together 188 athletes from 35 countries. Tunisia is represented by three athletes.

A new global performance for Masghouni

Engaged in the under 62 kg category, Wafa Masghouni made it to the podium, securing 3rd place tied with the Chinese Ximeng Shen.

The gold medal was won by Hungarian Viviana Marton, while silver went to Russian Lilia Khouzina.

This medal confirms the dynamic of the Tunisian, who was crowned world champion during the World Championships in China. In Malabo, she once again managed to shine in a tough category and slightly higher than the one in which she had triumphed.

Tunisia is represented at this world meeting by three athletes: Wafa Masghouni, Ikram Dhahri and Aïcha Zoghi.

A medal which reinforces the ambitions of Tunisian taekwondo

The Women’s World Championships, which is only the second edition after Riyadh 2021 – where Tunisia did not participate -, are seeing a large turnout this year: 188 fighters from 35 nations.

Masghouni thus becomes the first Tunisian medalist in this competition since its launch.

Masghouni’s performance comes in a context where the discipline is multiplying international results. This bronze obtained in Malabo recalls the depth of the Tunisian fishpond.
