The Ministry of Justice has launched the experiment with 200 electronic bracelets, at a cost of 1.6 million dinars, in order to test alternative sentences. The announcement was made during the plenary session on Saturday, November 15 devoted to the examination of the ministry’s 2026 budget, in the presence of the general legislation and internal regulations committees of the two chambers of Parliament and the regions.

A targeted and expensive experiment

According to the ministry, the use of electronic bracelets represents a significant cost, but constitutes an alternative measure to imprisonment. The objective is to relieve congestion in penitentiary establishments while maintaining strict control over prisoners placed under electronic surveillance.

The beneficiaries targeted by this experiment include hospitalized prisoners; workers in prison workshops; other categories of people in similar situations.

A step towards alternative sentences

This initiative aims to offer a more humane and secure alternative to traditional detention, while allowing individualized monitoring.

The Ministry of Justice recalled that the implementation of alternative sentences requires significant funds, highlighting the budgetary issue linked to this modernization of the execution of sentences. The experimentation with electronic bracelets is part of a policy of modernizing the penal system and reducing prison overcrowding.
