A tragic train accident occurred yesterday Wednesday evening in the region of El Thalja, in the governorate of Gafsa. A train carrying around 1,600 tonnes of phosphate, spread over 16 wagons, derailed and overturned, causing the death of one of its drivers.
According to the first information relayed by Jawhara FMthe victim, stuck in one of the cars of the convoy, did not survive despite the rescue attempts deployed by civil protection teams. His colleague, also on board, was evacuated to El Hédi Boussaïd hospital in Gafsa to receive the necessary care.
The exact causes of the accident have not yet been clarified, but an investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of the derailment of this phosphate transport train, belonging to the Compagnie des Phosphates de Gafsa (CPG).
This incident highlights the state of the railway infrastructure used for the transport of phosphate in the region, a vital sector for the Tunisian economy, but marked for several years by recurring technical and logistical problems.
