The defense, security and armed forces committee of the Assembly of People’s Representatives (ARP) and that of internal regulations and legal issues of the National Council of Regions and Districts (CNRD) held, on Monday, a joint hearing session with the Minister of Defense, Khaled Shili, devoted to the examination of the department’s 2026 draft budget.
According to Khaled Shili, the budget of the Ministry of Defense for 2026 will record an increase of 13% compared to that of 2025. This increase is part of the ten-year strategy 2020-2030, which aims to strengthen the operational capacity of the national army, to anticipate threats and to consolidate its participation in civil and military activities.
According to the TAP agency, the minister specified that this long-term vision is based on a clear objective: by 2030, the Tunisian army must be able to prevent risks and fully accomplish its legal missions in a regional context marked by growing security challenges.
Discussion on military service and the role of the army
Members of the two committees questioned the minister on military service, the role of the army in development efforts and the main axes of the draft budget. Discussions focused on the distribution of spending, strategic priorities and ways to improve military training and infrastructure.
Khaled Shili answered the various questions and promised to integrate the proposals and observations of parliamentarians into the final report relating to the budget of the Ministry of Defense for the 2026 financial year.
