The secretary general of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), Noureddine Taboubi, sounded the alarm on the persistent breakdown in dialogue between the union center and the government.
Speaking on Diwan FM, he affirmed that “all channels of consultation with the executive power have been closed for some time”, deploring a situation “unworthy of Tunisia in the 21st century”.
A social dialogue at a standstill
Taboubi recalled that Tunisia had long been cited as an example for its model of tripartite dialogue between the State, unions and employers. “Today, this model is broken,” he regretted, believing that only open and constructive dialogue can guarantee “a peaceful social climate and beneficial results for all”.
The union leader insisted on the need to avoid any escalation, saying: “We do not need tensions. »
“The workers elected us to act”
Asked about the possibility of a national strike, Taboubi clarified that “only the internal structures of the UGTT are authorized to decide on it”.
The general secretary concluded in a firm tone: “People elected us to improve their social situation, not to sit idly by. »
