The Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) denounced, Wednesday October 29, 2025, the “systematic attacks” targeting its structures and union leaders, describing them as “an organized plan to weaken the organization and divide workers”.

In a press release signed by its secretary general, Noureddine Taboubithe National Executive Office expressed its “total rejection” of these attacks and warned against “attempts to exploit justice or security apparatuses to intimidate trade unionists”.

“We will not remain silent in the face of the repetition of these attacks,” warns the union, adding that it “will take all necessary measures to defend its right to exist, its independence and freedom of association.”

Hostile campaigns and calls for accountability

The workers’ organization says it rejects “media and digital smear campaigns” aimed at tarnishing its image, asserting that these practices “will only strengthen its determination to defend workers’ rights.”

The Executive Office also called on the authorities to assume their responsibilities in protecting national institutions and the trade union movement, recalling that “freedom of association is guaranteed by the Constitution and international conventions”.

The UGTT announced the holding of an emergency meeting on November 5, 2025, devoted to examining the situation and defining the next steps of mobilization.

The press release finally calls on all regional and sectoral structures to meet and debate a national action plan.

“The Union will not be silent and will continue to act within the legal and peaceful framework to preserve its historic role,” the text concludes.
