“Conspiracy against the State” case: Continued detention and rejection of defense requests

The Criminal Chamber specializing in terrorism cases at the Tunis Court of Appeal rejected, this Monday, October 27, 2025, the main requests of the defense in the context of the so-called case of “plot against state security 1”.

Rejection of requests and maintenance of the remote procedure

According to a judicial source cited by the TAP agency, the Court refused the request to remove the videoconferencing device, considering that it was not competent to cancel the remote appearance procedure. She also rejected the requests for release filed by the defense and ordered the summons of the accused at liberty for the next hearing.

The hearing took place in the presence of President Boubaker Bethabet, whose presence was seen as a strong signal of institutional monitoring of a sensitive matter. Speaking on this occasion, the President said: “This is the official position of the bar and all lawyers,”
in reference to the contestation of the use of videoconferencing and the defense of the right to a fair trial.
The defense lawyers, for their part, denounced an “unfair” procedure and an attack on the fundamental rights of the defendants, believing that the use of videoconferencing compromises the right to a fair trial.

Hearing postponed to November 17

Earlier in the day, the Court decided to postpone the examination of the case until November 17, 2025, in order to hear the accused at large and to rule on the procedural requests still pending.

As a reminder, the Tunis court of first instance, on April 18, 2025, sentenced forty people — including political figures and businessmen — to sentences ranging from 4 to 66 years in prison, for endangering state security and belonging to a criminal conspiracy.
