This continental weekend turns into a nightmare for Tunisian football. Stade Tunisien and US Monastirienne, although better armed on paper, bit the dust in the second preliminary round, unable to overcome an obstacle within their reach. Two bitter tasting eliminations, two wasted opportunities, and a brutal observation: Tunisia no longer holds its place in Africa.
Stade Tunisien: useless victory, shameful elimination
They won without existing. The Stade Tunisien, dominant but sterile, beat the Olympic Club of Safi (2-1) in Radès without erasing the 2-0 defeat of the first leg. A victory for nothing, like a warm balm on an open wound.
Faced with an ordinary opponent, the Bardolais showed their limits: vain domination, wasted opportunities, defensive naivety. Too much desire, not enough edge. And in the end, a premature return home, without glory or new lessons.
US Monastir: end of the journey, same scenario
In Tizi Ouzou, it’s another disillusionment, just as predictable. US Monastirienne, corrected 3-0 in the first leg, lost again against JS Kabylie (2-1).
Courageous but overwhelmed, the Monastirian formation tried to save face without ever worrying the Kabyle machine. We were expecting a start, we saw a last stand. Nothing more.
Two shipwrecks, a warning signal
These two failures are not simple poor performances: they reflect a structural weakening of Tunisian football abroad. Lack of realism, lack of intensity, absence of continental culture – the same flaws recur, year after year.
Salvation, if it comes, will now come through Es tunis and the Star of the Sahel.
The Sang et Or, solid in the first leg against Rahimo FC (1-0), have the cards in hand to reach the group stage of the Champions League. L’Étoile, on the other hand, must fight a Dantesque battle in Sousse to erase its 0-2 defeat against Nairobi United.
Two matches to save the honor of a country, two teams to avoid total disaster.
