Gabès: More than twenty students victims of asphyxiation at Chatt Essalem college

A new gas leak emanating from the Tunisian chemical group causes panic within a school establishment.

More than twenty students from Chatt Essalem college in Gabès were victims of asphyxiation on the morning of Wednesday October 22, 2025, following a gas leak from a production unit belonging to the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT).

According to a civil protection source cited by Mosaïque FM, the students were immediately taken care of on site before being transferred to health structures in the region. Their lives were not believed to be in danger, but several of them showed symptoms of respiratory irritation and discomfort.

This incident revives the recurring concerns of the inhabitants of Gabès regarding industrial pollution and toxic fumes coming from the chemical complex, located near residential and school areas. Local associations have been calling for years for a relocation of the site or a strict strengthening of environmental controls.

Local authorities have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of this leak and the possible responsibilities of the Tunisian Chemical Group.
