Gabès: 89 demonstrators prosecuted after protests against pollution

The legal consequences of the movement of anger against pollution in Gabès are intensifying. According to Mounir Laâdouni, president of the regional section of the Bar Association, 89 people, including around twenty minors, have appeared before the prosecution since October 14, following demonstrations denouncing the deterioration of the environmental situation in the region.

Multiple prosecutions and prolonged detentions

According to the same source, several people arrested remain in detention while awaiting their appearance scheduled for Monday.

Yesterday, fifteen demonstrators were brought before the correctional chamber in a state of freedom for “participation in a gathering likely to disturb public order”, while five others were the subject of committal warrants, reports the TAP agency.

Furthermore, five people remain in police custody awaiting their hearing by the investigating judge, and three demonstrators were transferred to the anti-terrorism judicial center.

The governorate of Gabès has been shaken for almost a week by a wave of protests demanding the dismantling of units of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT). These movements were triggered after several cases of suffocation among students and residents, attributed to toxic gas emissions and chronic air pollution in the region.

The demonstrators are demanding an immediate response from the authorities to a situation they consider untenable, denouncing years of broken promises and the absence of concrete solutions to protect public health.
