Tunisia: Showers, thunderstorms and hail on the program this Wednesday, October 15

The country is preparing to experience further deterioration in the weather this Wednesday, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (INM). Locally intense thunderstorms, sometimes accompanied by hail and strong gusts of wind, are expected in several regions of the north, center and southeast.

Skies will often be cloudy and unsettled, with thundery rain over northern coastal areas in the morning, before gradually spreading across the north, central and locally southeast in the afternoon.

According to the INM, precipitation could be abundant in places, particularly in coastal and mountainous areas, where hail cannot be ruled out.

Maximum temperatures will vary between 27 and 33°C, but will not exceed 25°C in northern coastal regions and higher ground. The wind will blow from the south, sometimes relatively strong on the Gulf of Tunis and the eastern coasts, with gusts of up to 60 km/h during the passage of storms.

Two depressions interacting over the Mediterranean region

The Tunisian Weather and Climate Observatory had already announced Tuesday evening that two low pressure systems are currently influencing the region: one affecting southern Italy with strong storm activity, and the other gradually affecting Tunisia.

The governorates of Nabeul, Sousse, Monastir and Mahdia are expected to be particularly affected by moderate to locally heavy rains over the next 48 hours.

At the end of the week, a new low pressure front of Saharan origin could also reinforce instability in several regions of the country.

Vigilance recommended to farmers

In a press release published Tuesday evening, the Ministry of Agriculture called on farmers to be vigilant and to protect their livestock and agricultural equipment, by moving them away from wadis and securely securing greenhouses.

The authorities point out that these autumn phenomena, although recurring, can cause local flooding and material damage.
