On the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the Evacuation Day, the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, signed a presidential pardon decree affecting a total of 1125 detainees. This decision, traditionally taken during major national holidays, led to the immediate release of 364 prisoners.
According to the press release from the Presidency of the Republic published this Tuesday, 1035 other detainees will benefit from a parole regimesubject to compliance with legal conditions and required judicial follow-up.
This gesture is part of the clemency measures that the State can grant on the occasion of national celebrations, in particular October 15, the symbolic date marking the departure of the last French colonial forces from Bizerte in 1963.
No details were given on the criteria used for this pardon, but it comes in a context marked by calls from civil society organizations to improve prison conditions and encourage mechanisms for the reintegration of prisoners.
