True to his style, Donald Trump found a way to bring back to himself the Nobel Peace Prize awarded Friday to Maria Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition figure rewarded for her democratic fight against the regime of Nicolás Maduro.
During a press conference in Washington, the American president said that the winner had called him “to dedicate” the distinction to her.
“She told me she accepted it in my honor, because I really deserve it,” Trump said, before adding, not without humor: “I didn’t ask her to give it to me, but she could have.”
Maria Corina Machado did confirm a telephone interview with the American president in an interview with El País, but without mentioning a dedication.
At the White House, these statements raise eyebrows: several advisers denounce a political recovery, while Trump assures that he “will continue to save lives and conclude peace agreements”.
