During a speaking at Athens Airport, Greta Thunberg forcefully denounced the situation in Gaza, describing the crisis of “current genocide, broadcast live on our phones”.
The Swedish activist insisted that no one will be able to claim, tomorrow, to ignore the crimes committed, and pointed out the responsibility of international states and institutions:
“Under international law, states have the legal obligation to act to prevent and stop genocide. This means putting an end to complicity, exerting real pressure and stopping weapons transfers. We don’t see any of this. »»
For Greta Thunberg, governments fail to protect Palestinians and guarantee humanitarian aid, even though millions of people live under an illegal and prolonged seat, the fruit of decades of occupation and oppression.
She recalled the action of the Global Sumud Flatilla, intended to break the Gaza Maritime Bloc:
“This mission was necessary because our governments failed. It is a story of international solidarity, of people who act where the state does not. »»
The activist denounced the consequences of this inaction: humanitarian engorgement, violence and deliberate deprivation, while stressing that the Palestinian populations remain confronted with “untenable and inhuman” conditions.
It also linked this situation to other world crises, citing Congo, Sudan or Afghanistan, to show that injustices are often made possible by the inaction of public authorities, the media and international institutions.
Greta Thunberg concluded by calling each to use their platforms and privileges to act, affirming that international solidarity is a moral duty in the face of the inaction of states.
“What we do is the bare minimum. No one has to “save” the Palestinian people. We simply answer their calls and put an end to our own complicity. »»
