Political crisis in France: barely appointed, Sébastien Lecornu resigns

Less than 24 hours after unveiling the composition of his government, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu resigned to President Emmanuel Macron, who immediately accepted him. This event marks a major turning point in the political crisis that France is going through.

Sébastien Lecornu, only appointed Prime Minister a few days ago, now holds the shorter record record at the head of the government under the Fifth Republic. The decision to resign comes after strong criticisms concerning the composition of his team.

Sunday, October 5, Lecornu presented a government of 18 ministers, including 13 renewed from the previous administration. This announcement aroused a political outcry:

  • Rightthe Les Républicains party, by the voice of Bruno Retailleau, judged that the new team did not respect the “promised breakdown”.
  • Leftcertain political parties have mentioned motions of censorship, while the national rally called for the dissolution of the National Assembly.

Behind the scenes of a crisis

The resignation expresses the fragility of the current government and the difficulty for Emmanuel Macron to compose with a exploded majority and a determined opposition. The speed of this departure also highlights the internal tensions within the executive and the weight of criticism as soon as the new government team announces.

Discussions on a possible dissolution of the National Assembly are now at the heart of political debates, and the French political scene remains on alert.

With this resignation, President Macron must quickly appoint a new Prime Minister capable of stabilizing the situation and negotiating with a fragmented parliamentary majority. The political community and citizens are now awaiting announcements on the composition of a government capable of meeting expectations and relaunching government action.
