Tunisia – Deed protection: this municipality prohibits the slaughter of pregnant females and dairy cattle

The municipality of Gafsa has announced today a new measure to regulate animal slaughter in the region. According to an official press release, it is now forbidden to shoot down pregnant sheep, dairy cows and young sheep females, except on presentation of a reform certificate attesting to their incapacity for farming.

This certificate must be issued by the regional agricultural development delegation, competent in the matter.

This decision is based on a decree of the Minister of Agriculture dating from August 23, 1984, which regulates the slaughter of animals of sheep and beef. The objective is to preserve animal resources essential for agricultural production and to guarantee sustainable management of livestock in the region.

The municipality of Gafsa calls for breeders and butchers to comply strictly at this new provision and to collaborate with the competent authorities to obtain the necessary certificates.

This measure is part of a broader approach to protecting agricultural heritage and promoting responsible exploitation of animal resources.
