Tunisia: capped price of bananas, announces the Ministry of Commerce

The Ministry of Commerce has just fixed maximum price For the retail of the banana: 5 dinars per kilo for Egyptian bananas And 7 dinars per kilo for other provenancesannounced the decision at the origin of the control measures.

The regulatory authorities multiply the field operations: seizures of prizes from smuggling or parallel circuits sold “at shock prices”, then reinjection of these quantities in sales areas organized at the capped rate, it was also announced.

This is not the first time that the state has been intervening on the price of bananas in Tunisia. Since at least 2023–2025, several episodes have illustrated the same logic: fixing temporary ceilings, massive supply campaigns to stabilize the market, and warning from the ministry against tariff overruns.

In March 2024, for example, supplies had brought the price around 7.5 dinars per kilo after significant fluctuations; Previously, 5 dinar ceilings had already been mentioned in high tension contexts.

These previous ones show a recurring policy: act on the offer and control distribution to contain inflation on sensitive products.
