Tunisian consumers continue to undergo the prices of red meat, despite a sharp drop in cattle food costs. This was confirmed this Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the president of the Tunisian organization for consumer orientation, Lotfi Riahi.
During an intervention *on national radio waves, Riahi stressed that the profits of butchers reach up to 34 dinars per kilogram of meat. “The real cost of one kilo of meat is about 26 dinars, but it is sold in retail between 55 and 60 dinars,” he said.
The manager called on the ministries of agriculture and trade to provide the organization with exact data on the real cost of meat, in order to better inform the consumer and regulate prices.
According to Lotfi Riahi, the price of cattle food has recorded a notable decline in recent years. The price of the “Qarṭ” went from 13 dinars in 2023 to 6 dinars in 2025, while that of “hay” fell from 10 dinars to only 2 dinars over the same period.
This situation highlights a disturbing gap between the cost of production and the retail price, arousing the concern of consumers and calling for more strict regulation of the red meat market in Tunisia.
